IPAD STATUS BAR INDICATORS

The iPad has a status bar that is shown all of the time whilst in a Home screen and is also displayed in a number of applications.

The icon indicators on the status bar show various information about the state of the iPad and its wireless connectivity. If you have a Wi-Fi + 3G iPad and a SIM card is installed you will see the mobile phone networks signal strength and name in the top left of the iPad’s status bar. The time is usually displayed in the centre of the Status bar, if no other icon is required to be displayed there.

The other icon indicators you may see are detailed below:

Airplane mode
Airplane Mode

Shows that airplane mode (available on iPad Wi-Fi + 3G) is on - you can’t access the Internet using a mobile network or Wi-Fi network, or use Bluetooth devices. Non-wireless features are available.
To enter Airplane mode go to Settings and in the top on the Setting bar turn the Airplane Mode switch to ON.
After entering Airplane mode you can turn on Wi-Fi by going to Settings --> Wi-Fi and turning Wi-Fi to ON. You can also enable Bluetooth by going to Settings --> General --> Bluetooth and turning Bluetooth to ON.

3G
3G Network

Shows that your mobile carrier’s 3G network (available on iPad Wi-Fi + 3G) is available, and you can connect to the Internet over 3G. This is the fastest Internet connection you can achieve over the mobile phone network with the iPad.

EDGE
EDGE Network

Shows that your mobile carrier’s EDGE network (available on iPad Wi-Fi + 3G) is available, and you can connect to the Internet over EDGE. This is a medium speed connection that not all networks support.

GPRS
GRPS Network

Shows that your mobile carrier’s GPRS network (available on iPad Wi-Fi + 3G) is available, and you can connect to the Internet over GPRS. This is a slowest Internet connection.

Wi-Fi
Wi-Fi Network

Shows that iPad has a Wi-Fi Internet connection. The more bars, the stronger the connection. To turn on Wi-Fi choose Settings --> Wi-Fi and turn Wi-Fi on. A list of available networks will be displayed. The iPad will automatically connect to any network it has previously connected too. Wi-Fi connectivity over-rides connection to the mobile phone network.

Activity
Activity

Shows network and other activity. Some third-party apps may also use this icon to indicate an active process. The icon spins when it is processing information.

VPN
VPN Network

Shows that you’re connected to a network using a VPN (Virtual Private Network). To set up or to turn VPN On or Off go to Settings --> General --> Network --> VPN.

Lock
Lock Indicator

Shows that iPad is locked. The iPad can be unlocked by pressing either the Home button or the Sleep/Wake button, then dragging the slider. If you have password protected your iPad then you will need to enter your password, instead of dragging the slider. To lock the iPad press the the Sleep/Wake button.

Screen orientation lock
Screen Lock Orientation

Shows that the screen orientation is locked. When the screen orientation is locked you can turn rotate the iPad and the screen will not more. When turned off the iPad will automatically adjust to fit the new orientation. For further details on this feature click HERE.

Play
Play Indicator

Shows that a song, audiobook, or podcast is playing.

Bluetooth
Bluetooth Indicator

White icon: Bluetooth is on and a device, such as a headset or keyboard, is connected. Grey icon: Bluetooth is on, but no device is connected. No icon: Bluetooth is turned off. To turn Bluetooth On / Off or to set Bluetooth up go to Settings --> General --> Bluetooth.

Battery
Battery Status

Shows the battery level or charging status. If the battery has a thunderbolt inside it, then it is charging, if there is a plug symbol, it is fully charged. When not connected to external power the battery level goes from full to drained. The battery percentage in numbers may also be displayed to the left of the battery level indicator.
