KEYBOARD HINTS & TIPS

The intelligent iPad keyboard does far more than a fixed keyboard. The iPad keyboard accelerates your typing because it tracks what you type, then suggests words, corrects spelling, and inserts punctuation for you. It even learns the words you use most often. The trick is to just type away and trust the intelligence of the keyboard.

Word Correction

The iPad tracks what you type and compares it with its built-in directory, so it can suggest, or correct, words as you type. If you make a mistake whilst typing, your iPad will propose a replacement word in a bubble underneath the word you are typing. The iPad analyses the letters around what you have typed and, more often than not figures out what you really meant.

For example, if you accidentally type "insame", the iPad realises you really meant to type "insane", and suggests the word.

To accept its suggestion, tap the spacebar or full stop. To ignore the suggestion keep typing or tap the suggestion bubble with your finger.

Word Suggestion

iPhone Auto Correction

The suggestion feature starts when the iPad thinks it knows how you intend to complete a correctly spelt word. For example, if you type "accid", the suggestion says "accident".

To accept the suggestion press Space or enter a full stop, to ignore the suggestion just keep typing or tap the suggestion bubble with your finger.

Quick Keyboard Punctuation

The iPad automatically adds apostrophes in words like can't and let's. All you need to do it type 'cant', 'lets' or 'im' and your iPad will automatically fix the word when you tap the space bar.

After entering a period and space the next letter is automatically capitalised. The iPad also adds a period at the end of sentences and then capitalises the next word for you when you double-tap the space bar.

Turn Auto-Correction On / Off

To turn all auto-correction features on or off to go Settings --> General --> Keyboard and turn Auto-Correction on or off.

The iPad Dictionary

The iPad has a dictionary built in. As you type, it compares what you've typed against the words in that dictionary. If it finds a partial match, it displays a suggestion just beneath what you have typed.

If you accept the suggestion by tapping the Space or full stop, great.

If you allow the 'mistake' to stand, the second time you type the same word and reject the correction, iPad adds the new word to its custom, dynamic dictionary. From now on, it will accept the new word and will even suggest it the next time you type something like it.

Reset The Custom Dictionary

If you feel you've really made a mess of your custom dictionary, and the iPad keeps suggesting ridiculous alternate words, you can reset the custom dictionary by going to Settings --> General --> Reset and tap Reset Keyboard Dictionary.

Automatic Typing Help

Although you don't see it with you eyes, the size of the keys on the iPad keyboard are changing all the time. That is, the software enlarges the 'landing area' of certain keys based on probability.

For example, supposed you type 'tim'. The iPad knows that no word begins 'timw' or 'timr' and so, invisibly, it enlarges the 'landing area' of the 'e' key, which greatly diminishes your chances of making a typing error.

Error Correction

If you make an error or want to go back and add a word or letters you can move the cursor to make a correction.

Hold your finger down and hold anywhere in the text to bring up the magnifying glass.

iPad Magnifying Glass

Whilst still holding down, drag the magnifying glass and cursor anywhere in the text. When the cursor is exactly where you want it release you finger.

You can now add or delete text from where the cursor is.

Larger Keyboard

To make it easier to type on the iPad you can rotate the keyboard from portrait to landscape. By doing this, the keyboard is larger and easier to use. Applications that use the landscape keyboard include Mail, Messages and Notes. You can also rotate the screen in Safari to enter web addresses, and in landscape mode it is easier to view web pages too.
