On the iPad there is a battery indicator on the top right status bar, that goes from full to empty, but there is also a percentage meter, that can be turned ON or OFF.

To activate the percentage meter on your iPad go to Settings -> General -> Usage. At the top of the 'Usage' page turn the 'Battery Percentage' to 'ON'.
